Dear ,

It’s been a big month for Best’s with the recent release of the 2006 vintage of our iconic Thomson Family Shiraz and Bin 0 Great Western Shiraz. It was great to speak to so many of our loyal supporters who made the most of the pre-release special Icon offers.

Viv and winemaker Adam Wadewitz were privileged to take some of Australia’s top wine media, including James Halliday, Jeremy Oliver and Huon Hooke through our new releases to great feedback. We’ve also had some great wine reviews of our 2008 Bin 1 Shiraz, Great Western Cabernet 2008 and Great Western Riesling 2009 which were released in September.

Enjoy the latest update from Best’s Great Western and look out for some special Christmas wine offers in your inbox over the coming weeks.

Cheers,

Cheers from The Thomson Family

Best’s Thomson Family Shiraz and Bin 0 Shiraz just released

1 November marked the release of our iconic Thomson Family Shiraz 2006 and Bin 0 Shiraz 2006. Author and wine critic James Halliday said the collection of wines was a "demonstration of terroir....an outstanding tasting of wines we all know.”

Both iconic wines in their own right, these wines really depict a sense of place within Great Western; Thomson Family Shiraz has been made since 1993 (one hundred years since the Thomson Family settled in the area) and is produced from Henry Best’s original 1866 Shiraz plantings – only available in exceptional years.

Bin 0 as a descriptor on the wine label has been in use for over 100 years and is produced from Best’s oldest plantings and selected from the oldest yielding blocks on the Concongella vineyard.

Thomson Family Shiraz is classified as ‘Outstanding’ by Langtons Fine Wines and Bin O as ‘Distinguished.”

Best's In the News

Best’s Great Western Bin 1 Shiraz 2008

““Yum, this is a fine Victorian shiraz from one of the state’s best producers in the Great Western district. Mulberry, plummy fruits, with hints of dried spices of clove and black pepper meld into a satisfying medium-bodied shiraz. Sealed with a screw cap and well priced, this is a good now or cellaring proposition for a few more years.”
Fergus McGhie The Canberra Times - October 2009

“Good colour; abundant pepper and spice notes run through both the bouquet and the medium-bodied palate; the fruit flavours are of plum and black cherry, the tannins soft and fine, oak merely a bit player.” 94 points, drink to 2018, $25, Screwcap, 14.5% alc.
James Halliday, October 2009

Best’s Great Western Cabernet 2008

“...It's a lovely, stylish wine that is even more enjoyable with food. Drink now to 20-plus years. 92/100.”
Huon Hooke – Sydney Morning Herald - October 2009

What’s all the fuss about Sparkling Shiraz?
What’s all the fuss about Sparkling Shiraz?

The Great Western Wine Region has been home to sparkling Shiraz since the early 1900s and is now one of the most famous regions in Australia for producing exceptional Sparkling Shiraz. It is a uniquely Australian style and one of the styles international wine experts continue to get excited about. Releasing a sparkling version of Best’s famous shiraz was a a great opportunity for Best’s Great Western to refine the style of sparkling shiraz from the region.

Winemaker Adam Wadewitz discovered that certain blocks within the region really lend themselves exceptionally well to the sparkling shiraz style. Upon releasing the inaugural 2006 vintage, he sought counsel from Best’s owner Viv Thomson as well as Ian Mackenzie (formerly a winemaker at Seppelt Great Western), to ensure the wine spoke of place, but also was characteristic of the regional style. Adam’s goal is to ensure that Best’s Great Western Sparkling Shiraz defines the Great Western region and is an elegant, refined and well balanced wine – it tastes of plums, blueberry fruits and spice. A perfect match for food over the festive season – being a great match to roast Turkey on Christmas day or end the day with Christmas pudding.

Why Best’s Great Western is such a best kept secret
Why Best’s Great Western is such a best kept secret

Founded in 1866 in the Great Western wine region of Victoria, Best’s Great Western is one of Australia’s oldest family owned and operated wineries. Best’s is known to have some of the oldest vines in Australia and produces extraordinary wines with great longevity. Throughout the history of the winery, there have only been two owners, the Best family, who founded the winery, and the Thomson family, who bought it after Henry Best’s death in 1920. The fifth generation of the Thomson Family is now running the winery.

With a reputation for producing exceptional Shiraz, Best’s makes authentic expressive regional wines with a strong sense of history. Henry Best’s original Nursery Block, containing over forty different varieties and his old Shiraz and Pinot Meunier plantings, are among Australia’s most valuable viticultural resources.
